“The Resilience Project has today announced its first ever public event in Auckland with founder and best-selling author Hugh van Cuylenburg.
 
With an incredible 30+ date tour planned for Australia, The Resilience Project is making its way to Auckland in July, giving Kiwis the chance to learn about positive mental health strategies in a time where we need them most. The Resilience Project will deliver emotionally engaging advice by unpacking the research on mental health and breaking it down into simple tips that will leave you feeling empowered to improve your wellbeing.
 
Hugh has reached over one million people through his best-selling book, incredibly successful podcast, seminars and school, sport and workplace programs, The Resilience Project will share their knowledge with Kiwi audiences through a one-off show at the Bruce Mason Centre on July 2nd.

THE LION KING International Tour has broken records on its opening week of ticket sales. NATIONWIDE ‘TRADE CAREERS’ SURVEY LAUNCHED TO ENCOURAGE MORE KIWI WOMEN INTO TRADES

The COVID-19 Pandemic has seen more than 22,000 Kiwi women lose their jobs. Today, Trade Careers has launched a nationwide survey to gather information and find ways to boost the number of women working in the infrastructure and construction sector, a sector crying-out for great wāhine staff.

Women in Trade Collective’s (WITC) survey will help discover what support New Zealand women need to enter the trades, supported by focus groups around the country. At present, only 13.5% of all workers in the trades are female. Trade Careers hopes to uncover what the barriers are, and explore the opportunities to see more females enter the industry.

Kelly Bennett, Principal Advisor, WITC commented: “A skill shortage is evident within the trades and we want to ensure that women consider the trades as a career option. This survey will arm us with crucial information to help boost the number of women working in infrastructure and construction, ensuring they enter the industries feeling confident, well-supported, and well-connected.”

35-year old Elizabeth Cramer-Roberts is currently completing her first year of an electrical apprenticeship. Elizabeth, mother of one, previously worked in retail, hospitality and qualified as a make-up artist, but decided to retrain when the global pandemic hit to safeguard her job security.

Elizabeth Cramer-Roberts explained: “Every day it’s evident to me that women could bring transferable skills to the trades. I’m passionate about creating a safe and inclusive workspace within the construction industry - and I would absolutely encourage other women to explore employment and training opportunities in this sector.”

Additionally, a nationwide employer survey will be launched on April 21 2021. WITC wants to learn more about the barriers and opportunities that employers experience to employing women. Following this, in May, a series of co-design workshops will be launched across Aotearoa New Zealand to develop solutions to increase women’s participation in the trades.

Trade Careers is presented by Women in Trades Collective (WITC) and is supported by BCITO, Connexis, Skills and Competenz. Trade Careers received funding from the Tertiary Education Commission.

LIVE NATION AND VODAFONE ANNOUNCE THERE’S A TUESDAY AS THEIR APRIL ONES TO WATCH ARTIST

Indie folk band There’s A Tuesday have been announced as Live Nation and Vodafone New Zealand’s fourth feature artist for 2021 for ONES TO WATCH. The four-piece band joins an incredible slate of Kiwi artists who have been recognised for their musical potential and talent through the profile-raising platform aiming to introduce Kiwis to new local music.

Hailing from the garden city, the Christchurch-based band first came together when members Minnie and Nat met at a party at age 16, sparking them to play together the very next day. Recognising their musical chemistry, they entered the Smokefree Rockquest, taking out not only the solo/duo division in their hometown but also the nationwide title.

The duo became a quartet when Gus and Joel joined the band, quickly catching the eye of other musicians around Aotearoa, including Mako Road and The Butlers, who both extended an invitation to open for them on their nationwide tours. Through their Smokefree Rockquest win, they were also given the chance to work with Six60 bassist Chris Mac to record their debut single Piñata Head at Auckland’s iconic Roundhead Studios.

Their debut EP Dance With Me Before We Cry was released in 2020, which launched them into their own national headline tour, visiting Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, as well as the festival circuit, playing back-to-back shows throughout summer at a number of festivals including Rhythm and Vines, CubaDupa, Electric Avenue, Nostalgia Festival, Tora Bombora and many more.

THE ATTITUDE TRUST BOARD APPOINTS GRACE STRATTON, JUSTINE MUNRO AND LOREN SAVAGE AHEAD OF THE 2021 ATTITUDE AWARDS

The Attitude Trust are pleased to announce the appointment of three new members to its board, Grace Stratton, Loren Savage and Justine Munro. The charitable trust champion the integration of people with disabilities into every aspect of New Zealand political, social, economic and cultural life.

Attitude Trust chairperson Dan Buckingham commented, “With our annual Attitude Awards going from strength to strength, The Attitude Trust is now in a position where it is ready for growth and fresh perspectives. Grace, Loren and Justine each bring strong and diverse skillsets to complement the current Board of Trustees, including each of them having their own personal lived experience of disability. As well as continuing to deliver the Attitude Awards we're looking forward to giving back even more to the disability community, as well as continuing to provide scholarships for people who live with disability.”

Winner of the 2020 Attitude ACC Supreme Award, Grace Stratton’s achievements are extensive, including co-founding All is for All, an accessible communications, media and talent agency. Grace was a Young New Zealander of the Year finalist in 2018, was named InStyle’s ’50 Badass Women for 2019’ and is a full-time student at AUT, studying a double degree in law and communications.

Of the appointment Grace commented: “I feel deeply privileged and excited to be appointed. Over the last couple of years as I have formed All is for All, I’ve been incredibly grateful for the work Attitude has done as it sets out to elevate and amplify disabled people in Aotearoa. They have been trail blazers, who’ve set a path that made it a little bit easier for me to create space for our community in my own work. I recognise the responsibility and importance of this role and I look forward to learning, advocating and supporting the Trust as it sets out to transform for the better perceptions of disability."

Loren Savage, a communications specialist, was born with achondroplasia, but prefers the term Little Person. Loren combines her lived experience of disability with both her career and volunteer work. She has been part of the Attitude whānau for over 10 years, featuring in a number of their series. She explained:

“From Attitude following my journey to University, to my wedding day, to being a recipient and judge of the Attitude Awards, being able to support the kaupapa of Attitude as a trustee will be a great honour. Attitude provides a trusted and well-known platform for us disabled people to build pride in our community, and it will be an honour to continue to support their mahi.”

Justine Munro is Director of the 21C Skills Lab, and in April, will join New Zealand Centre for Gifted Education as CEO. Justine’s previous roles include the Director of Champions for Change - a group of 50 New Zealand CEOs and Chairs from the private and public sectors committed to developing a new cohort of diverse leaders, as well as CEO of the NZ Centre for Social Innovation. Justine is passionate about ensuring that all Kiwis are able to achieve their full potential.

“I am very proud to be joining the Attitude Trust Board to serve alongside such amazing changemakers. As a parent of children with neurological differences, I honour the resilience, determination and pride with which people with differences and their whanau live and contribute, and I believe we can and should make that path a much smoother one. We have so much to learn and share,” commented Justine Munro.

The Attitude Awards are a nationally televised event celebrating the achievements of Kiwis in the disability sector. The 2021 Attitude Awards will take place at the Cordis Hotel in Auckland on December 1 with more information to follow in May, including how to put forward a nomination.

The Attitude Trust funds scholarships for disabled youth to attend tertiary education and shines a light on achievements within the disabled community. Local marine scientist and TV presenter, Dr. Riley Elliott, has been announced as host for Blue Planet II Live in Concert, ahead of the highly anticipated upcoming Auckland shows. Presented by BBC Studios, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) and Auckland Live, Blue Planett II Live in Concert will take place on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th April, at the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre, Aotea Centre.

Respected marine biologist, Riley Elliott has dedicated his life to the conservation of the ocean’s most formidable predator, the shark. His passion for sharks has seen him author a book, give a TEDX Talk, and film countless Shark Week shows for Discovery Channel, including a new 6 part series called Shark School. A go-to commentator on sharks in Aotearoa New Zealand, it’s Elliott’s mission to educate the public on the often-misunderstood species.

Riley Elliott says, “It is an absolute privilege to narrate this incredible event. The words and imagery of the BBC and David Attenborough are what inspired me to become a scientist of the natural world. It taught me the recipe of public communication of science using stimulating visual imagery. To do this now, on their stage, is a dream come true, but ultimately I hope it will engage the public, create awareness of our natural world and the struggles it faces, and ultimately inspire positive change and conservation, for nature and for ourselves.”

BBC Studios’ Acting Head of Live Entertainment Australia and New Zealand Louise Hill, says: “With his passion for the natural world, Riley is the perfect fit to take audiences on a journey through this amazing visual and musical experience, which combines awe-inspiring footage from the acclaimed Blue Planet II with the spectacular music score performed by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Following the incredible success of the BAFTA-winning BBC Studios natural history series Blue Planet II, Blue Planet II Live in Concert will bring the wonders and mysteries of the planets ocean's and its characterful inhabitants to the stage. Accompanied by the original immersive television music score by Bleeding Fingers Music, composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, the concert will be performed live by APO, and conducted by David Kay.

During the filming of the Blue Planet II television programme, film crews embarked on 125 expeditions in 39 countries, and spent over 6,000 hours of deep-sea diving armed with the latest state of the art filming and recording equipment.

A fantastical journey from icy polar seas to pulsating coral reefs, from the luminous deep sea to enormous kelp forests: take a deep breath and immerse yourself in a whole new world hidden beneath the surface of the sea.

MUROKI ANNOUNCED AS MARCH ARTIST FOR LIVE NATION AND VODAFONE’S ONES TO WATCH

Live Nation and Vodafone New Zealand have announced soulful up-and-comer Muroki as the March featured artist for their ONES TO WATCH program. Muroki becomes the latest artist in the program after launching in late 2020 as a platform for Kiwi music fans to discover rising musicians.

Hailing from Raglan, Muroki pulls influence from jazz, R&B and rock to create enticing tunes that have captured the attention from New Zealand music stars, including Kiwi pop-darling BENEE, who played Muroki’s song to the legendary Elton John on his Apple Music radio show. Muroki performed for thousands of Kiwi music fans across the country when he opened for BENEE on her tour, before becoming the first artist signed to her Olive Records label.

Muroki’s rise to success has come after years of hard work, with the singer spending his days planting trees to afford new studio equipment and taking high-school guitar lessons to build his skills. It’s paid off, with Muroki becoming a regular on the festival circuit and his groovy new single Wavy, released last week, is the perfect send-off to the Kiwi summer.

VAN GOGH ALIVE: FINAL SHOWS ADDED IN CHRISTCHURCH AND AUCKLAND SEASON TO OPEN EARLY

DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND, Van Gogh Alive has added a final week of shows to the Christchurch season, before opening its doors early in Auckland on Saturday 10th April. Tickets strictly subject to availability, don’t miss out!

Huge demand for Van Gogh Alive tickets in Christchurch and Auckland has prompted organisers to extend their respective seasons. New and final shows have been added in Christchurch, where it is currently showing at Air Force Museum, with an extended run from Monday 22nd March - Sunday 28th March. The large-scale, indoor experience is also set to open its doors early in Auckland at Spark Arena on 10th April. Tickets for both seasons are strictly limited and available now.

Ben Elton exploded onto the comedy scene more than 30 years ago, hosting Channel 4’s groundbreaking Saturday Live. Since then, Ben has achieved huge success as a stand-up comic, author, playwright, actor and director.

He's written television shows such as The Young Ones, Blackadder 2, Blackadder The Third, Blackadder Goes Forth, The Thin Blue Line, the famous ‘exam’ episode of Mr Bean, the recent UK smash hit Upstart Crow and many more, as well writing and directing two feature films: 2000’s Maybe Baby and 2017’s Australian-made Three Summers. Last year he wrote Kenneth Branagh’s critically acclaimed biopic of William Shakespeare All Is True which starred Judi Dench and Ian McKellen.

ROTORUA CELEBRATES ITSELF ON SCREEN AS COUSINS HITS KIWI CINEMAS

With its diverse landscape and being home to a talented group of filmmakers and storytellers, Rotorua is today celebrating its role as the lead location in Kiwi film Cousins. The film releases in nationwide cinemas today, following the world premiere in Rotorua last night. It will then open in Auckland when the alert level changes.

Waru directors Ainsley Gardiner and Briar Grace-Smith helm this time-transcending Māori drama based on Patricia Grace's novel about three cousins, separated by circumstance, and their long journey to find each other. Shot over six weeks in Rotorua and Wellington, Cousins has been described by reviewers as ‘a deeply moving dramatic triumph’ (Flicks.co.nz).

With the local screen industry estimated to have spent $2m in the region in 2020 and expecting to grow to $4m in 2021, Rotorua is fast cementing itself as a welcome home for film projects in Aotearoa. The region has featured as a key location in a number of films and television series including Pete’s Dragon, Yogi Bear, Without a Paddle and the upcoming Vegas TV series. With Rotorua Economic Development (RED) investing in the local film sector in Rotorua, it looks to grow its presence in the district and capitalise on the strength of indigenous storytelling here in Rotorua.

Rotorua Economic Development’s support of the local industry has also included sponsorship of the Rotorua Indigenous Film Festival and support for Waiariki Film Studio’s development of a studio in Rotorua. Waiariki Film Studio’s White St studio is a 1,000m2 stage space with additional workshop and office spaces which can service small to medium New Zealand projects such as the recent TV series Vegas. With PGF funding confirmed for the stage 2 development of a larger sound stage, the Waiariki Studio team are looking to establish Rotorua as an indigenous film hub.

Co-director for Cousins, Ainsley Gardiner, comments: “Shooting Cousins in the Rotorua region gave us the opportunity to work with local Māori, both in front of and behind the camera, creating a huge amount of inspiration and excitement for young Māori in the film industry. It also fulfilled a long-term goal of mine to work in one of my tribal areas.”

Gardiner continues: “Beyond that, the more films that are shot in the Rotorua district, the greater its capacity will be. Rotorua will become known not only not only for its beautiful scenery and welcoming, talented people – it will also have the capacity to service large budget international films.”

The New Zealand Film Commission is proud to have played a part in this significant local production providing both financial and creative support through the NZFCs own investment programme and the Government’s NZ Screen Production Grant.

Production has commenced in Wellington, New Zealand this week for a new comedy feature film starring a host of well-known actors. From the producers behind The Breaker Upperers, Cousins, and Top of the Lake, Going, Going weaves together the stories of three very different women as they come face to face with their wild, true selves.

Going, Going marks Taylor’s directorial debut on a feature film. Her extensive acting credits include Eagle vs Shark which she co-wrote. She’s recently been on the big screen in Baby Done and This Town.

“I am very privileged to be working with an astonishing bunch of creative and kind people (and animals!) to bring this script to life on the big screen (I love working with animals!),” commented writer-director Loren Taylor.

The film’s cast includes Elizabeth Hawthorne (The Light Between Oceans), Victoria Haralbidou (Brides), Loren Taylor, Robyn Malcolm (Top of the Lake), Robbie Magasiva (Sione’s Wedding) and Cohen Holloway (Hunt for the Wilderpeople).

Going, Going will be produced by Philippa Campbell (Top of the Lake, Rain) and Georgina Conder (Cousins, The Breaker Upperers). The film is made with investment by the New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC), the NZFC’s 125 Fund, a bespoke fund launched in 2018 to celebrate New Zealand’s 125 years of universal suffrage and with the assistance of the New Zealand Government’s Screen Production Recovery Fund. Going, Going is supported by additional investment from industry partners Department of Post and Imagezone and made with the generous support of Weta Digital. The film will be distributed in New Zealand and Australia by Vendetta Films.

ISLAND TIME ON MOTUTAPU RESCHEDULED FOR MARCH

With the recent change in COVID-19 Alert Levels in Auckland and the complex nature of this event, organisers have in consultation with Ngai Tai Ki Tamaki and DOC made the decision to reschedule Island Time on Motutapu from 27 & 28 February to Saturday, March 27 & Sunday, March 28 2021.

Hosting an event on Motutapu, one of the Hauraki Gulf’s oldest islands, requires an extra layer of biosecurity to protect one of our most precious taongas and its species, as well as infrastructure to get guests, vendors and suppliers safely to and from the site. As such, we’re making the cautious decision to postpone the event now and give our customers as much notice as possible.

All existing tickets are valid for the new dates, with ticketholders simply required to login to their Eventbrite account to obtain their updated tickets. For those who can not make the new dates, can apply for a refund via www.endeavour.live/refunds. You will have until 5 March to apply for the refund, after which refund requests will no longer be accepted.
