The band's chemically imbalanced mix of gritty guitars, haunting piano, off-kilter synths, hip-hop production, cinematic vision, and beautifully possessed vocals transformed them into a phenomenon beloved by a diehard global fanbase known as "MCID" (My Crew Is Dope). After grinding it out as an underground curiosity, they scraped a path to mainstream infamy with their 2015 full-length debut, "Mister Asylum". The band and Aotearoa hold a special bond. Highly Suspect’s last visit to Aotearoa was in 2024 around Wellington, Christchurch Auckland for their ‘As Above, So Below’ tour, where presale records were broken, ticket demands were extremely high and venues were upgraded. The band dedicated their 2024 song “The Blue-Eyed Devil” as “New Zealand’s Song”, frequently chart in NZ rock‐radio countdown The Rock 2000, and most recently they supported NZ up-and-coming Wānaka band Powder Chutes after noticing them in the crowd for their Christchurch gig, by offering them an opening spot and performance opportunity with them at their Auckland and Wellington shows.

TEEKS made his entrance with the 2017 debut EP ‘The Grapefruit Skies’. The now Platinum-certified EP was met with critical acclaim in New Zealand, setting the young artist up for a global career. Today, pop-rock 5-piece Castaway release their sophomore EP Nondual, alongside the Te Reo version of their 2024 heartfelt track ‘Daisy’ - retitled ‘Teihi’. Listen HERE.
Castaway are the five brothers bound by music, friendship, and a flat in Ōtautahi Christchurch where songs are born between dinner-table laughs and queues for the dryer. The band is made up of Austen (bass), Jack (saxophone, keys), Jackson(vocals, keys, guitar), Joe (vocals, drums), and Rhys (guitar). Their sound is a shameless fusion of anthemic pop hooks and rock energy, built to make crowds sing, dance, and feel everything all at once.
At a Castaway show, you don’t just watch - you get pulled into a wave of soaring choruses, driving guitars, and lyrics that cut straight to the heart. Influenced by the stadium-filling spirit of The Killers, the emotional sweep of Coldplay, and the modern edge of Inhaler and The 1975, Castaway turned shared stories of young love, growing pains, and the search for meaning into songs that stick in your head and your chest.
Since forming in their first year of university, the band has grown from jam sessions in the student halls to sharing the stage with Mitch James and Drax Project, lighting up Selwyn Sounds, and being spun on ZM, The Hits, More FM, Radio Hauraki, and RNZ. Nondual captures that journey of five boys figuring it out together to a band finding their voice.
Nondual is more than just the sophomore EP for the band - it’s a defining moment in their story. The title, inspired by a philosophy class, refers to the idea that everything is connected, that opposites are simply two sides of the same coin. For Castaway, the concept resonated deeply. It reflected their own path: five students from different corners of Aotearoa New Zealand, once pursuing engineering, psychology, product design, and philosophy, choosing to unite around music and give it everything. That idea of unity runs through Nondual. Across the six tracks, the band explores the spectrum of human connection: young love, heartbreak, long distance, deception, grief, and hope. Each song is a different interpretation of nonduality in the context of relationships, with the contrasting experiences bound together as the same whole.
The writing process began while the lads were living together in 2020, across dinners, parties, and late-night deep and meaningfuls in their rooms. It further took shape during the Artist Development Program at SOLE Music Academy in Christchurch under the guidance of the powerhouse that is Sacha Vee. Castaway were then taken under the wing of critically acclaimed and renowned producer Greg Haver, who helped shape their raw ideas into something polished yet true to their identity. Recording sessions followed in 2023 and 2024 at The Lab in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland with engineer Scott Seabright.
Some songs arrive at the exact moment they’re needed. For Castaway, that song was their 2024 release, ‘Daisy’. Originally written after guitarist Rhys lost his grandmother, ‘Daisy’ began as a way of making sense of grief. In a haunting twist of timing, the song was written in the same year that bassist Austen lost his mother to breast cancer. Suddenly, ‘Daisy’ carried even greater weight. Its themes of absence, longing, and remembering a guiding presence at the dinner table or in quiet moments of need became deeply personal for the whole band.
Today’s announcement sees Castaway re-release ‘Daisy’ in te reo Māori, retitling it ‘Teihi’. This decision reflected the band’s own journey of connecting with te ao Māori. Inspired by artists like Lorde, Six60, and Drax Project, who had also released te reo versions of their songs, Castaway saw an opportunity to connect with te ao Māori while deepening the song’s meaning and embarking further on their own journey with the language.
To ensure authenticity, the band collaborated with Regan “Kupu” Stokes, a registered translator and teacher of te reo Māori who also tutors Austen. Releasing ‘Teihi’ is a source of pride and gratitude. It’s a step toward embracing te ao Māori as part of Castaway’s identity as New Zealanders and musicians, and they hope it inspires listeners to embark on their own journeys with the language.
Above all, Nondual and ‘Teihi’ are time capsules, bottling the triumphs and heartaches of a pivotal year in Castaway’s life and offering listeners not just songs but an invitation to share in the experience. Looking back, the band sees Nondual as the leap that transformed them from students into musicians. Looking forward, it’s the launchpad for everything to come with a debut album already in the works, and a determination to push the boundaries of what pop rock can be.

NORRIE RETURNS HOME FOR 10TH CRACK AT ASB CLASSIC GLORY IN AUCKLAND
Off the back of the biggest win in his storied career over World No 1 Carlos Alcaraz this week, Kiwi-raised Cameron Norrie has confirmed his return to the ASB Classic in January.
The 30-year-old British player, who grew up in Auckland, will be back to compete at the Manuka Doctor Arena for the 10th time.
Norrie, who rose to a career-high No 8 in the world, has worked his way back from a lengthy injury layoff to reach No. 31 this week. His outstanding first-time victory over Alcaraz this week has moved him into the third round at the prestigious Paris Masters and will likely see his ranking rise to No 27 next week.
The 1.88m left-hander learned the game at Bucklands Beach Tennis Club and was a regular fan at the ASB Classic as a youngster. He moved to the US on a tennis scholarship before switching tennis allegiance to Great Britain, where his parents were born and where he was able to receive significant support and backing.
He first played at the ASB Classic as a teenager, twice finishing runner-up in 2019, where he dropped just one set all tournament before losing to American Tennys Sandgren in the final. He was also runner-up two years ago against French veteran, Richard Gasquet after winning the first set.
Norrie will return buoyed by his form and the victory over Alcaraz.
“Massive, so big for me. I have been coming back from my injury. I have just tried to enjoy my tennis in the second half of the year and I was able to do that and to get a win like this, the biggest of my career, my first over a World No. 1 and especially against the most confident player in the world right now,” said Norrie.
ASB Classic Tournament Director, Nicolas Lamperin is delighted that Norrie will return for his 10th appearance in Auckland.
“Cam learned the game in Auckland and he spent a number of years as a young fan watching here which fuelled his desire to become a world-class tennis player,” said Lamperin.
“There is no-one who would like their name on the trophy at the ASB Classic more than Cam. We are indebted to his on-going support for our tournament, and we are sure that his fans, especially from the Bucklands Beach Tennis Club, will be out in force to support him.
“Tennis is a massively challenging game, but made even more difficult when players face the extra challenge of returning from injury.
“No-one works harder at his craft and gets the more out of his game than Cam. And off the court, all our ASB Classic team and our sponsors cannot speak more highly about his support for our tournament and the way he conducts himself back in Auckland.”
Lamperin said that he is currently negotiating with several other players and hopes to announce a further key signing next week.

New Zealand’s greatest independent music and arts festival is back. Splore 2026 is returning to Tāpapakanga Regional Park in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland on February 20th-22nd with a bold new vision and a killer line up, as the festival moves to a new era with fresh programming, new creative spaces, and curated experiences. Today, the three-day celebration gets even more exciting with the second drop of its music programme, as well as the announcement of 2026’s much anticipated festival theme.
Co-curated by Shaquille Wasasala aka Half Queen alongside long-time festival curator John Minty, this stellar international and local line up brings the best of music and art from home and around the world, set across six stages in one of the most beautiful festival locations in the world.
Each year Splore sets a theme that becomes the shared language, kaupapa and spark for their well-known legendary dress-ups. The reveal is always a little mysterious, always much awaited. This year, the name is simple: BEINGS. Beings represents everyone. Being here, being present, just… being. All our glorious, perfectly wobbly, imperfect Beings.

Today’s announcement sees the much anticipated return to stage of the iconic Coco Solid [Kuini Control] with CoconutClouds, bringing a celebration of timeless queer storytelling to showcase the new vanguard of Aotearoa artistry.
Another local icon, JessB returns to Splore showcasing the re-release of her original breakout mixtape with bonus songs including ‘Okay Then’, ‘Boohoo’, and ‘Don’t Stop’ featuring Jamaican dancehall artist Roze Don, as well as a captivating Baltimore Club-style remix of ‘Bullseye’ produced by HalfQueen & Pasquinel.
Dubbed Italy’s Daft Punk, Mind Enterprises, who are leading the Italo Disco revival (yes it’s a thing) also join the Splore line up. Literally building a cult following overnight, Mind Enterprises’ mildly ironic party sound has led to over half a billion streams of their track “Never Going Home”.
Also announced is American singer Parson James, whose genre-blending sound and deeply emotional storytelling have positioned him as one of the most distinctive voices in modern pop and dance music. Best known for co-writing and performing on Kygo’s multi-platinum hit “Stole The Show,” which has surpassed 1 billion streams globally, Parson’s music is rooted in contrast — soul and euphoria, gospel and EDM, struggle and resilience. His perspective as a queer, biracial artist raised in the conservative South has shaped a narrative that is as emotionally powerful as it is culturally important.
And adding to the party flavour, Splore welcomes back Glastonbury favourite, The Beatles Dub Club and Brooklyn’s most fabulous and dynamic house music duo, Monstah Black and Manchild Black, who are The Illustrious Blacks.

Aotearoa will be further treated to the talent of Lewis’s good mate, Ireland born Aaron Rowe. For Aaron, singing and playing guitar is not a choice, it’s an extension of himself. Almost exactly a year ago, Aaron was singing covers at his regular Saturday gig in The Dame Tavern when one of his future managers would walk in and discover him playing. A few weeks later, Lewis Capaldi would also stumble into Aaron’s usual Sunday sessions at Cassidy’s on a stag do. Like fate, a few weeks after that, he would bump into Lewis again whilst performing at an open mic in Nashville, where Lewis introduced him to his best friend, now Aaron’s manager, who just so happened to have listened to his demos that very morning. Over a month before the release of his first single, ‘Hey Ma’, people were already sharing their own versions online by piecing together the song through snippets that had surfaced on social media. KŌAWA STUDIOS AND AUCKLAND’S TWO LARGEST FILM STUDIOS PARTNER TO STRENGTHEN NZ’S SCREEN INDUSTRY
Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC)’s Kōawa Studios has teamed up with Auckland’s two largest film studios, Auckland Film Studios (AFS) and Kumeū Film Studios (KFS), in a new agreement designed to create clearer pathways for producers, supporting New Zealand’s screen production pipeline. The agreement will also give UC students invaluable opportunities to step directly into industry environments.
The non-exclusive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reinforces New Zealand’s appeal as a production destination. For producers, it will create clearer pathways to access AFS, KFS and South Island connections, helping attract more projects from New Zealand and overseas.
This collaboration marks a pivotal step in connecting New Zealand’s screen production ecosystem, said Sam Witters, Director of Kōawa Studios at UC.
“By aligning with Auckland Film Studios (AFS) and Kumeū Film Studios (KFS), Kōawa Studios strengthens its national footprint, educational mission and industry credibility. It’s a signal to the global screen community that we’re building a truly integrated, future-facing production pipeline.”
AFS and KFS are two of New Zealand’s largest and most established facilities, hosting productions from Power Rangers, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and East of Eden through to A Minecraft Movie and Chief of War. Together, they offer world-class sound stages, have the largest ocean surface tanks and dive tanks in Australasia, and are capable of handling the very largest international productions. Both studios have a strong record of showcasing South Island locations in major productions and continue to welcome all productions and collaborate with a range of training providers.
The partnership will also enable UC’s Bachelor of Digital Screen with Honours (BDigiScreen(Hons)) students to get hands-on experience with real productions and industry tools. It will make it easier for producers to see what studios across New Zealand can offer, from Auckland’s facilities to the South Island’s stunning locations, and help to attract more projects from here and overseas.
UC’s screen partnerships are already creating opportunities for students and industry. Most recently, Kōawa Studios worked with leading New Zealand production company Velvet Moss on their international feature film Holy Days, where two UC BDigiScreen(Hons) interns gained crucial on-set experience. This builds on existing agreements with Stretchy Productions (Kiri and Lou), Aardman Academy (from Aardman Animations, the Oscar-winning producers of Wallace and Gromit), New Zealand International Film Festival and Doc Edge, as well as previous film productions such as We Were Dangerous (Piki Films) and Head South.
“This new partnership is a great example of how education and industry can work together for mutual benefit,” said Professor Kevin Watson, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts at UC. “Our students will graduate with hands-on experience, and the sector gains skilled talent ready to contribute.”
The news comes as New Zealand’s creative industries are being recognised as serious economic engines. Contributing nearly $19 billion to GDP and ranking as the country’s fourth-largest export industry, bigger than fruit, wine or seafood, the sector supports over 100,000 jobs and connects with billions of global consumers through digital platforms.

GRETA VAN DEN BRINK ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE ‘CHILL COOL GIRL’
Rising New Zealand singer-songwriter Greta van den Brink has today unveiled her new single Chill Cool Girl, a dreamy, tongue-in-cheek indie-pop track that captures the all too relatable performance of being effortlessly “chill” at the start of a romance.
Greta, who first found her way into music after a career in film and stunt performance for Netflix, Amazon, and Apple, has quickly established herself as one of Aotearoa’s most original voices.
