LOVE POLICE, BANISHED MUSIC & STRANGE NEWS PRESENT AN EVENING WITH GILLIAN WELCH & DAVID RAWLINGS

September 1, 2026 818

Completing a three-year odyssey of Southern Hemisphere visits, the legendary Gillian Welch and David Rawlings head south once again this February to fulfil a promise to visit all major centres in Australia and New Zealand.

In 2027, that journey arrives in Aotearoa, with the Grammy Award-winning duo set to perform five shows across New Zealand, travelling from Auckland to Hamilton, New Plymouth, Wellington and Christchurch.

Known for their distinctive blend of Appalachian, bluegrass, country, Americana and folk, Welch and Rawlings have built a remarkable body of work across a career spanning more than three decades. Their music draws deeply from traditional American songwriting while remaining timeless, intimate and unmistakably their own.

The tour marks Gillian Welch and David Rawlings’ first-ever performances in the South Island, as well as their first shows in the rest of New Zealand in more than a decade.

ABOUT GILLIAN WELCH & DAVID RAWLINGS

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are Grammy Award-winning songwriters and musicians whose music draws deeply from Appalachian folk, old-time, bluegrass and country traditions. Since working together on the release of Welch’s acclaimed debut album Revival some thirty years ago, the duo have developed a distinctive sound built around Welch’s evocative songwriting and Rawlings’ intricate guitar playing, creating songs that feel both steeped in history and entirely their own.

Across a celebrated career, they have released a string of acclaimed albums and become influential figures within contemporary Americana and roots music. Songs such as Look At Miss Ohio, Everything Is Free, Revelator, and untold more are considered modern folk classics. Their enduring appeal lies in the simplicity and strength of their performances - two voices, acoustic instruments and songs that carry an extraordinary sense of place, time and storytelling.
